Editorial standards

Being featured in The Frontier Edit should mean something. These are the rules that make it mean something.

Independence

Editors decide what we cover and what we say about it. Nobody can pay to be interviewed, profiled, covered or ranked, and nobody can pay to keep a story out. Advertisers and partners do not see stories before publication.

Partner content

Stories that a partner has paid for are marked “Partner content” wherever they appear: on the story, on the front page and in search results. They are written to the same standard of accuracy, and they are never interviews, profiles or news.

The Frontier List

The list is judged by editors and outside readers against published criteria. No fee, sponsorship or advertising buys a place on it, shortens the judging, or shows anyone the list early. Honorees are told the week before publication and cannot change their citation. If a judge has a financial or personal connection to a nominee, they do not score that nominee.

Sources and facts

Numbers in our stories are checked against documents or a second source before publication. Where we rely on a company’s own figures, we say so. Interviews are edited for length and clarity; we do not change the meaning of what someone said, and we do not let subjects rewrite their answers after the fact.

Right of reply

Anyone we criticise is given the chance to respond before publication, with enough time to do so. Their response, or their refusal, is reported.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we correct it in the story and say what changed and when. Write to contact@frontieredit.com.

Conflicts of interest

Our writers do not hold shares in the companies they cover, do not accept payment or gifts from them, and declare any personal connection to an editor before taking a story.
